San Francisco
San Francisco is perhaps the most famous Gay destination in the world with one of the most prominent LGBT communities in America, and an important history of human rights activism.
Prominent annual events in San Francisco include Pride in June, Folsom Street Fair in September, and Dore Alley in July. The Pride parade route follows Market Street from the embarcadero to Civic Center, while the Folsom Street events are in the SoMa neighborhood. SoMa is home to bear and fetish haunts like the Eagle and Power House, as well as the city's best drag cabaret OASIS.
San Francisco's Castro neighborhood was home to gay liberation movement leaders such as Harvey Milk, and still today is home to the largest density of Gay bars, clubs, and Gay-friendly businesses. Pop in to the historic Castro Theater for a show, stop for a drink at Twin Peaks Tavern, brush up on your history with the commemorative sidewalk plaques of the Rainbow Honor Walk, chill in sunny Dolores Park, or pick up some poppers and lube at Rock Hard. There's plenty to keep you busy in the Castro!
There is plenty to do in San Francisco outside of the Castro as well. In the Spring and Late Summer/Fall you'll find Marshall's Beach abuzz with gay men sunning themselves within a mile of the stunning Golden Gate Bridge. There's even a clothing-optional section! Plan accordingly though, as the Summer Months of July and August often bring dense fog and cold to this part of San Francisco.
Taking a short trip out of the city also offers a lot of options. Oakland is a 15-minute BART ride from San Francisco, and has a thriving nightlife and restaurant scene. Adorable Seaside town Sausalito is accessible by Ferry or even by bicycle for those who want to ride across the Golden Gate. Sonoma is about an hour north by car, and is a must-do for wine enthusiasts (or amatuer wine aficionados).
There are a few hotel options in the castro ranging from the all new chic Hotel Castro - complete with roof deck and lobby bar - to the iconic and budget friendly Beck's Motor Lodge. For something more intimate B&B experience try the Parker Guest house. If you prefer to stay in the Downtown/Financial District instead of Castro, you can't go wrong with the historic luxury of the Palace Hotel.
